Put Safety Measures In Place

Safety measures are a great way of ensuring that your staff is being looked after and that there are precautions in place to help avoid injury altogether. This might be in the form of signs and warnings that are placed around the worksite or office, for example. You may want to introduce everyone that comes into the company with an office safety training pack or to have either your HR or operations manager train the staff member in the basics of keeping safe in the office. There are lots of different measures you can take to ensure that your staff is being looked after and it’s up to you as the employer to make sure that these expectations are being met at all times. If not, then you could be liable for legal cases where a staff member has been injured to a lack of safety precautions in place. That’s not a situation you should want to find yourself in.

Have The Right Protective Gear

The right protective gear is important when it comes to keeping safe, and with medical supplies being in demand at the moment due to COVID, this should be a reminder that our health is important. Educate Your Employees

As much as you have a responsibility to your staff, they also have a responsibility for their own wellbeing and that of their colleagues. With that being said, it’s good if you can offer them any additional training that you think they might need when it comes to them staying safe within the workplace. There’s plenty of basic training courses that could be useful for them as well as common courses like First Aid Training, etc. It’s important you have some sort of budget when it comes to staff training.

Encourage Regular Breaks

Regular breaks are a must, and so it’s worth making sure each and every staff member is getting the breaks they need throughout the day. Be strict on ensuring they’re getting up from their desk and not spending their lunch breaks eating in front of their computer. Be the encouragement they need to take a proper break and to ensure regular breaks are also taken throughout the course of the working day.

Safety in the workplace is paramount, so be sure to check that every staff member is ok and that you’re doing all you can for their safety.

Everyone in the workplace has a duty to ensure that the environment is as safe as possible. Of course, the ultimate responsibility falls on the shoulders of your employer. A workshop or a training program is essential for supporting mental health in the workplace. With a strategy like this, you create an environment of education about mental health, and you place some positive emphasis on creating an open workplace that people can be productive in.

Indeed, a mental health workshop can be beneficial for all kinds of reasons. It can lead to more sensitivity in the workplace, it can lead to further treatment options to be explored, and it can even just mean a healthy, honest, and open dialogue about mental health at work is being had. Give a keynote speaker the platform, and give your employees the chance to take some time and put their needs at work first.

Provide Options

And finally, be sure to provide as much information on the options for mental health that are available to your employees. Let them know there’s help out there, and that the company can help them get it. Most people are well aware of the outbreak which has shaken the world over the last few months. What’s the difference between a happy team and a miserable one in the workplace? Sometimes, it’s less than you might imagine. You wouldn’t believe how few people get genuinely thanked for their work. It has been shown time and time again that eating lunch at your work desk is detrimental to your emotional health, to your productivity, not to mention that it’s pretty unhygienic. A break isn’t supposed to feel like simply taking the necessary time to eat at work, it’s supposed to feel like a clean break from work, and having a break room where people can do that, even with a few games or distractions, can be excellent at refreshing them for the latter part of the workday.

Tasty treats for the team
Satisfying the occasional need for indulgence and treating the team can have a big effect on morale and make them feel a lot more cared for and appreciated. It can be as simple as getting them a box of danishes to share, or you can go as far as installing a commercial roaster so they have fresh made coffee shop-quality coffee at the ready. It can do a lot to improve how well your team feels they are treated.

Some life to the office
Most steps to improve the office will have a significant effect over time, but perhaps one of the simplest and most surprisingly beneficial improvements is bringing an office plant into the environment. They are known to reduce stress, increase positivity, and boost creative thought simply by making the office a more lively and colorful place, and they may have some health benefits, such as helping with air quality and noise level reduction.

Team lunches, dinners, or drinks
As mentioned, a tasty treat improves morale, but enjoy it together can also improve the sense of belonging and togetherness in the team. Arranging for a once-a-week team lunch, once-a-fortnight team dinner, or once-a-month team drinks can help foster stronger social bonds in the team. This can make it a lot easier for them to feel comfortable when collaborating on projects for their work, as well.

The above changes to the workplace can have more of an impact than you might imagine, but don’t expect that any trophy or cup of coffee will make up for toxic management practices, unfair demands, or culture of bullying, for instance. If there’s rot at the core of the office, you still need to deal with it.

CCTV can increase staff comfort and make them feel safer in the workplace and in surrounding spaces, such as car parks or stairwells. Furthermore, they act as a very clear deterrent to crime.

Alarms
Not just talking about security alarm systems, alarm equipment in general can be very helpful to bringing attention to hazards and encouraging your team to react responsibly to them. Of the two types, choosing between a buzzer vs speaker is all about determining your needs. Buzzers can be useful for immediately bringing attention to a nearby fault, such as a malfunctioning machine, so trained individuals can react appropriately. Speakers are better for communicating information, such as the particular aisle or area a spill or incident has happened in.

Safety apps
It’s not all hardware you should be thinking about, either. Health and safety data technology is playing an increasing role in recognising the risks that your team might face in the workplace. These apps can help you make checklists for safety, file hazard reports, and record information is an accident does happen. As such, they can help you become more aware of incidents that happen more regularly, allowing you to react and create a safety policy around them more quickly.

GPS systems
The workplace doesn’t always have to be in an office. If you have a fleet of vehicles, then the road is your workplace just as much as anything else. If that’s the case, then GPS and fleet management technology can be crucial for ensuring your drivers’ safety on the road. You can not only track their route but pay attention to any habits that could potentially put them at risk, including speeding, and crack down on drivers that fall into such habits.

Wearable tech
If you’re hoping to create a healthier team for a more reliable workplace, then looking at the tech that they could be wearing on their person might be an investment worth making. These devices can track a range of details, including monitoring their vitals, and can be set up with reminders such as when they need to take a break or get up and stretch to avoid ergonomic injuries.

Tech can help you make the office a much safer environment, but never think that you should rely on it, alone. Training your team to recognize safety hazards in the workplace and making an effort to address any common risks with effective police and practices is number one. The tech above can help, but it can’t solve your problems.

It’s essential that your workplace is a safe environment for employees. Accidents will happen in almost all trades – even if there aren’t any obvious hazards – but you should still try to minimise the risk, if not to protect your employees, to at least protect your company from the threat of a lawsuit. Here are just a few ways in which you can reduce workplace injuries and keep it a safe environment.

Point out hazards with signage

The easiest way to prevent injury is to clearly point out hazards with signage. Such hazards could include anything from a hot water tap to a low ceiling. In the case of multiple hazards, don’t be afraid to provide a large informational sign or even a manual to make guides aware of multiple hazards. It could also be important to provide temporary signage such as wet floor signs when mopping.

Supply safety equipment

Safety equipment such as these men’s work boots could also be necessary for reducing injuries. By making it mandatory to wear such equipment, you can ensure that employees are physically guarded against dangers. There could also be tools such as step ladders and fire extinguishers to consider.

Introduce health and safety protocols

Health and safety protocols require employees to carry out tasks in a specific way. It’s undoubtedly worth committing some time to look at ways to reduce the accidents in your workplace, even if there aren’t that many in the first place.

Assess Your Workplace and Staff

Some accidents can be avoided just by taking the time to look at what is going on. You should complete regular risk assessments, to help you to spot any potential risks and find ways to reduce them.

Promoting a good atmosphere for them to work in will help with a good mental attitude in the workplace, and as an employer, you should be taking steps to make sure this is the case for your staff.

Make sure they take their breaks and have somewhere that they can socialize for them. Some social interaction is a great way of relieving stress and they will return to their workstations more alert and ready to work.

Help Employees Identify Mental Health Problems

It is thought that in the US, one in four employees suffers from mental health problems to some degree and that most of them suffer in silence. This is in part because many of them do not recognize the cause of their problem and think it because of aging, the menopause or any one of a number of other things. Some workers think it is normal to feel this way and you need to help them identify when the way they are felling is not part of normal stress.

Helping them to recognize the symptoms and the triggers is one of the most effective things an employer can do for their workforce. You could invite a mental health expert to your business to give them a talk on what to look for and how to deal with it. There are confidential mental health screenings available and sometimes a questionnaire about their habits and symptoms can be very enlightening for someone that has been trained in these matters. There are also free online screening tools that you could encourage them to use.

The whole point is that a happy workforce will be more productive and produce a better quality of work. The time taken to ensure that none of your employees are suffering from mental health problems because of their job, or that none happen in the future, could save you a lot of time, effort and money ion the long run.

Most mental health issues are very treatable, but they may need some time to seek the help they need. Letting them leave work for weekly therapy sessions that are during business hours for example, could prevent that employ from being off work long-term while they are treated.

Most employers would not have a qualm in calling for help if an employee becomes physically ill while they are at work, but those same bosses will totally ignore mental health issues. There is still something of a stigma attached to mental health problems, but many of them could have been prevented to start with. To the sufferer, they are just as bad and sometimes worse, than a physical illness and they deserve the same care and attention as someone who is having a heart attack while sitting at their desk.

If you any idea that a member of your staff may be becoming depressed or anxious while they are at work, speak with them or get someone else trusted to, and suggest that they seek treatment before it gets even worse.
