We can worry we waste time and resources, and as a business owner, you can often doubt whether your team is as effective as you once thought they were. But it’s only natural to have this idea from time to time – it’s what you do next that makes sure your work environment remains positive and productive!

Most of all, you need to be sure you’re doing things within the workplace that helps to maintain a good work ethic. And to help you out with that, we’ve listed some points below you should keep in mind.

Make it a Social Place

Ensuring there’s a social element to your workplace is always going to boost productivity. As people, we need to be able to socialise and make connections no matter where we go, and stifling that can lead to long term repercussions. The workplace certainly feels a lot less lonely when you’ve got a friend working in the next cubicle!

To encourage this, take down walls, make sure full length breaks are given, and outfit the break room to ensure people can sit and talk. Put a coffee machine and microwave in there, along with chairs, tables, and even a sofa. Set up opt-in team building days, have ‘fun’ days in the office like Dress Down Friday or pizza on Tuesdays, and make sure to get involved. Don’t let managers sit on the sidelines!

Check on Safety Regulations

The next thing to do (and at least once a week) is to check on your safety regulations. How does your workplace stack up against health and safety regs? Things can change in an instant, and you might not even know until an accident happens.

People are only truly productive when they’re safe and comfortable. You’ll always want your employees to be happy at work, and investing in things like fire door solutions is part of that, especially if you work with a lot of machinery! You’ll also want to look into ergonomic needs, slip and trip hazards, eye and muscle strain, and just how stressed an employee can get when spending time in your workplace.

The first thing that we are going to say is that you should help them where you can. If you can see that one of your employees are struggling, or a group of them are, then you should ensure that you are helping them. You can’t just watch them struggle and walk away like they aren’t working for your company. Don’t worry too much about actively seeking them out though. If they need help, they will let you know, and if they don’t, just wait until you notice it yourself.

Another thing that you are going to need to do is ensure that you are providing them with the best tech on the market. Or, at the very least, tech that you can afford that does the same thing as the best on the market. There is no point in buying tech from years ago, as this is not going to work as efficiently as you want it to. It will be a lot slower than the newer models that have been released. We understand the urge to save money, but you can’t do that here. You have just got to make the investment.

You also need to ensure that they can use it properly, which might mean some people need keycaps, so that is also a consideration.

Train Them

The final thing that you are going to need to do is train them. They should know the expectations of your business, and they should also be trained by your business or by someone that you employ to ensure that they are all up to the same standard. Having everyone go through the same training, you ensure that no one person can say that they don’t have the same experience as others, because it simply doesn’t matter. Training them is the best way to get them on board with your business!

As we’ve seen throughout history, work is a place where crisis and emergency situations can arise unexpectedly and it’s important to have some level of preparation. You’ll really get to see human nature in all its variability when you run drills for emergencies with your employees. Some people panic, they don’t know what to do and are at the mercy of the unfolding events. Some people go into survival mode and they just manage to do what will save them from harm. There are a few that have a good head on their shoulders, they don’t panic nor do they go into autopilot mode. They are conscious and ready to help others while saving themselves. You’ll only know what group of people you have working for you, if you do some drills around emergency training.

Fire drills

This is perhaps the simplest to undertake for any business. It is going to be a test to see the employees’ reaction time, their understanding of protocols, how they interact and help each other, but also, their ability to think clearly under immense stress. As the business owner you want to see that your employees remain calm. Panic spreads faster than a fire can and if people are not thinking clearly, they are more likely to end up harming themselves or others around them. So you want to hire a fire drill training service, that can teach employees how to react during a scenario whereby the office they are in is on fire, or the floors above or below are engulfed in flames.

Hazardous spills

If you work in warehouse storage or perhaps manufacturing, you are no stranger to hazardous spills. Training for this sort of thing is of course vital, but you also need a good biohazard spill kit. The kit will have absorbent material in it, which you pour over a spill. The material will quickly stop the spread of the liquid on the floor and make it easier to collect. It forms little solid clumps which can be swept up and removed. Personal protective equipment for the employees tasked with the cleanup is also going to be in the kit. We have found that if you have a reliable spill kit for hazardous liquids, employees are more likely to get the job done quicker and with more confidence.

Unconscious employee

Most people know what to do when they see an injured person. You know, stop the bleeding, put pressure on the wound, lay them back, lift their legs and check their pulse every 30 seconds. But what do you do when you come across someone who is unconscious? This kind of drill is very useful as the knowledge gained can be utilized in multiple scenarios. You should check the airway, check for any obvious signs of lacerations, punctures or impact trauma. Then provide CPR if required, warm their body, lift their feet above they head level and try not to move their back or neck.

Every business should run these types of drills at least once a year to keep with good common practice. It’s something that will come in handy during very rare but deadly situations.

Slips, trips, and falls happen in the workplace all the time. Many are complete accidents and are quickly resolved. Yet, a few remain that occur due to a failure to meet safety requirements or complete negligence. Therefore, and owing to the fact, there are many dangerous jobs out there, such as construction, hazardous waste removal, and law enforcement, the importance of adequate safety at work should be a company-wide policy of guaranteed employee protection.

Employees are Everything

As a business owner or manager, you should know that your employees are an essential tool in your business arsenal. Many will assume it is profit that drives a successful company, yet there is no profit to be made without adequate staff. And this means looking at past events and practices as well. It might be the case that an injury is an isolated event and an unfortunate tragedy. It’s that age-old question for employers:

How should I spend company money?

This may be something that you have been considering today.

Of course, much of what you earn will be put into company savings. This is sensible as you never know when you might need the money you have put away. And when it comes to spending money, you will probably focus on marketing to boost your company profile. Again, this is understandable.

But when you are thinking about what you can spend company money on, consider the people who keep your business going. We could be talking about your customers here, but there are other people who push your business forward. We are, of course, talking about your employees. When you invest in them you invest in your company’s future, as your spending can make a difference to the ways in which they view and work within your business.

So, with this in mind, let’s take a look at areas of spending that will benefit your employees.

#1: Personal development

For your employees, this is a biggie. When you focus on personal development, your employees will be better equipped to do their jobs, and they will be less likely to leave your company. They will be more likely to stay because they won’t need to migrate to another company to grow and develop as people.

So, consider your employees as a group and as individuals. What training courses will develop their skills? What conferences can you book them onto? Focus some of your spending in these areas to improve and shape the employees in your workforce. They will benefit and so too will your business when they are able to excel in their roles.

#2: The workplace environment

For the sake of employee morale, do what you can to improve their environment. They will feel happier at work if you do and as such, they will also be more productive. So, at the very least, you should allow your employees to shape their own workstations. They could bring in photos from home, for example, and any other thing that could personalize their workspace.

But when it comes to spending, there is much you could do. If you have the funds to do so, you could opt for a full renovation. You could create more space, add fresh bursts of color, and create better break areas. Alternatively, you could do a little bit at a time, especially if you don’t have the funds for a complete makeover. Improving the environment with commercial wall decor is certainly one thing you could do. You could also purchase more storage to reduce the amount of clutter in the workplace. These are just some ideas but look at pictures of office fitouts online and consider the changes that could make a difference in your workplace.

When you develop your company’s technology, you will improve the efficiency and productivity of your employees. So, consider the tech that will make your employee’s lives easier and invest accordingly.

An obvious place to start is computer equipment, of course. If your employees’ computers are slow and prone to other problems, you will aid their productivity if you give them something new. Then think about the software your employees could be using. Look for those programs that will simplify the complicated tasks they may be doing manually. Take a look at these digital workplace technologies too and consider the benefits to your employees. There is much you can invest in so consult with your employees on the tech that could make a difference to them.

#4: Employee rewards

We all like to be rewarded for things we have done well, so consider what this might mean for your employees. Sure, a word of thanks and a pat on the back might sometimes suffice, but how about something tangible? Knowing that they will be due a reward could spur your employees on to work harder, so bear in mind that what you spend will also benefit the greater needs of your business.

You could spend money on your entire team. You could reward them with a meal out or a weekend away somewhere. When money is spent to bring your employees together in such ways, you might also encourage team bonding. You could also spend money on your employees as individuals. It could be something as simple as a gift card to their favorite store. Or you could splash out on something specific if you know it will please the lucky employee. Outsourcing doesn’t always make sense, especially when your employees are equipped to take on certain responsibilities. However, if they are already overworked and struggling to cope with multiple demands, you will make their lives easier if you outsource some of the tasks you have been asking them to do.

For your employees, this will mean a smaller workload. This isn’t a bad thing, especially if they have more than enough to do to fill their working week. Without the burden of tasks they might struggle to complete on time, they will be able to focus on quality work in the jobs they are given to do. They will also be less prone to burnout and the health issues that come with that common problem.

#6: Employee perks

Every business leader should include employee perks as they can improve the retention rate and make their company more attractive to new hires. There are all kinds of perks you could include, such as paying for child care for the employees who need it and providing healthcare insurance for all of your employees.

Accidents at work can have severe consequences and can happen even in roles that are not considered high-risk. Trips, slips, and falls are common incidents in the workplace, and in many cases, these could be preventable.
