According to a recent Springtide study, as many as 73% of young people between the ages of 13-25 identify as spiritual. Yet, church attendance is lower in our younger generations than in any generation that’s come before them.
This is an odd discrepancy, and it highlights one pressing fact – young people simply don’t tie their spirituality to the church in the same ways that their parents and grandparents do.
With this in mind, something needs to change to keep spirituality alive in a modern audience. And, those changes will most likely come from considering the following reasons for the spirituality/church divide.
Reason 1: A new approach to worship
Young people with limited timeframes and a growing need for connection are increasingly finding alternative ways to make room for spirituality in their lives. This is a requirement that online sermons have been attempting to fulfill since the pandemic but, with just 13% of young people reporting a feeling of joy after an online sermon, further steps may also be necessary.
Church-led community initiatives and college-based religious representatives seem to be especially effective in this sense. A focus on personal connections forged with one key religious leader, rather than entire congregations, also seems to help young people feel more supported, and more impassioned in their religious practices.
Reason 2: The age divide
65% of people aged 65 or over attend weekly church sermons. Churches, therefore, face the challenge of appealing to older audiences and attracting a new generation.
This can be a difficult balance to strike, and it’s one that many churches are failing to achieve. Luckily, priests like Father Adam Park are proof that this divide needn’t be as restrictive as it seems. Through a focus on appealing to both audiences, he’s managing to bring a whole new generation to his church. A similar approach, which respects tradition while also making way for the new, could see other churches enjoying similar levels of success.
It’s also important to note that age-old church-institutions like marriage are simply no longer as relevant to young people as they were to previous generations, and may even feel restrictive to individuals who continue to be left outside of these institutional practices.
Equally, far from requiring church groups and other internalized focuses that have traditionally worked alongside the institution, many young people are calling for the church to contribute towards modern concerns like climate change. And this needs to happen outside of institutional confines.
An ongoing shift to more inclusive marriage will perhaps be the biggest help here, but pastors and priests could also benefit from listening to the concerns of young people (which are largely led by environmental worries), as well as continuing to prioritize age-old church concerns like local charity.
The proof is out there – young people are still turning to spirituality in their droves. But only time will tell whether the church can continue to play the same role in that focus that it’s fulfilled for hundreds of years.

Squash
A lot of us have heard of squash, but have most likely not played it. Squash was invented in the UK in the 19th century and continues to be quite popular in Britain. Its following around the world has also been growing – so much so that it has even been shortlisted for the Los Angeles 2028 Summer Olympics.
Squash is played in an indoor court with two or four players. Unlike many other racket sports, players do not face opposite one another with a net in the middle, but instead stand beside each other hitting the ball against a wall. The aim is to hit the ball at the wall in a way that makes it hard for the opponent to return it. This guide delves more into the rules of squash. It is widely known for being a physically intense and challenging sport.
Racquetball
Racquetball was invented by a man named Joseph Sobek in Connecticut in 1950. The squash-like sport has gradually become more popular over the years and is now played internationally.
You can play racquetball on a standard squash court, however it has slightly different rules to squash and typically uses a different type of racket. Compared to squash rackets, racquetball rackets are shorter and wider. The ball used in racquetball is also larger. Racquetball is known to be easier to pick up than squash.
Pickleball
Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in the US. It originates in Washington state, where it is still very popular. It is often described as a mix of ping pong, tennis and badminton.
Players hit a ball over a net using a pickleball ‘paddle’. This is different to a netted racket and more similar to ping pong paddle. The sport is played on a pickleball court, which is about the same size as a badminton court. Players serve diagonally into the opposing court, striking the ball with the paddle in an upwards motion. Padel
This Mexican racket sport has also been gaining popularity in recent years. It is believed to have been invented by a man named Enrique Corcuera, who modified his squash court to play his own version of tennis.
Padel is usually played in doubles on a Padel court, which is smaller than a tennis court. Like pickleball, it uses paddles instead of net rackets. The scoring system is pretty much the tennis scoring system, but with an added ‘golden point’ rule to help win games more quickly. Beach tennis
Beach tennis combines elements of tennis and volleyball (and yes, it is played on a beach). It was first played in Italy in the 1970s and has slowly started to be played around the world.
Unlike in tennis where the ball can touch the ground, the ball in beach tennis cannot touch the ground – and so the game is played entirely in volleys. This makes it much faster paced than tennis. It is played over a high net that is similar to a volleyball net and uses a depressurised ball that moves slower than a standard tennis ball. Qianball
This hybrid of tennis and squash originated in China in 1998 and has become popular across the country. It is less popular in other parts of the world, but is gaining traction.
Qianball is one of the more unique racket sports. The ball is attached to a n elasticated string, which is attached to a hook in the floor or weighted ball bag. Both players stand on the same side of the court and hit the ball over the net, Because it is elasticated, it returns back to the same side of the court where it is then hit by the other player. Tamburello
One of the oldest and most obscure racket sports on this list, tamburello is a sport with 16th century Italian origins that uses tambourines as rackets.
It is commonly played with two teams of three. Players volley the ball back and forth across a large court. You can click here to check out a demonstration.

The cool weather is no reason to slow down, as Fall remains a busy season for most families. With only a few months left to Winter, most families will want to get their holiday plans and preparations underway. It’s also a wonderful time to stop, connect with your kids, and have fun together as a family. Whether it’s planning outings or engaging in home-based activities, it’s the simple things that create strong bonds and boost a child’s development. The season is filled with opportunities for kids to learn and grow in a fun way. Here are some ways to boost your child’s development this Fall.
During this season, the summer heat gives way to cooler and crisp weather, the leaves change colors, and there’s much to see, feel, and smell outside. So take your kids out as often as you can – every day, if possible. Engaging in various outdoor activities this Fall can improve your child’s motor skills. Choose activities like running, raking, collecting leaves, climbing, hopping, catching, and hide-and-seek. These activities involve gross motor skills, which are important for coordination, good posture, balance, and overall physical development.
2. Plan more family activities
Backyard BBQs, get-togethers, family dinners, parties, and family time are also excellent ways to boost your child’s development this Fall. These social activities can help improve your child’s social skills, understand, relate with others, and develop relationships. You can help improve by teaching them appropriate words and actions during social gatherings. Also, consider taking them to kid-friendly social events or encouraging them to play with other kids outside the home. Remember to address issues that could discourage your child from engaging in social activities. For example, consider the possibility of hearing aids if your little one has been diagnosed with hearing loss. You can also learn effective tips to address social awkwardness in your child.
3. Give them simple ‘day jobs’
Understandably, you’re busy with plans and preparations for the upcoming holiday season, but your kids can help in simple ways. So, consider giving them simple day jobs so they don’t feel left out or abandoned. For example, you can ask your little one to wipe the dinner table, fold laundry, sweep the floor, or put littered toys away as their job. Such simple responsibilities will make your child feel important and teach them much about being responsible. Some kids can even start preparing snacks or helping with minor kitchen duties. It helps if you give them a little tip, allowance, or reward for completing their tasks, which will encourage them even further.
Sometimes, temperatures may drop too low to head outside. But you can encourage creativity indoors by encouraging your kids to create Fall-themed arts and crafts. They can draw various Fall sceneries or objects, make collages, create Fall leaves chalk art, pumpkin picture frames, and other fun but educational activities. Art and craft allow your child to tap into their imagination and creativity. It also helps to improve their motor skills. Plus, it’s a fun way to spend time together with your little ones.
