Staying Ahead of Smart Tech

A key focus of my blog is Technology. As time goes on, we’re developing new technologies for everything. As such, it’s important to be able to understand the positives and the negatives of these new technologies. The following contributed post is thus entitled, Staying Ahead of Smart Tech.

Yes, we can control our lighting and heating from our phones and we don’t even have to be in our homes to start recording our favourite shows, but is this smart technology all that it’s cracked up to be? Is there a danger that we are, in fact, growing far too reliant on tech that makes our decisions for us? In this short article we take a look at the ups and downs of smart tech and the role it plays in all our lives.

Ups

Let’s face it, the use of clever, interconnected devices that talk to one another really does make our lives easier. From smart speakers that respond to a single voice command to devices that send and receive data about our home power usage and adjust their levels accordingly.

In theory all this technology can not only save us time but money too as we use its capabilities to keep a closer track on power use and help lower our bills.

Smart tech also helps stay independent as we have greater access to the things that make our life easier and safer. Smart timers across multiple platforms that remind us to take medication and phone apps that monitor our diet and if we’re getting enough sleep.

Downs

One of the largest areas of concern when it comes to interconnectivity is that of security and privacy. If we take the latter first, how are we to really know what becomes of all the data that is held on us. Not just our confidential information, such as our bank details but all the day-to-day interactions we have with our devices, the entertainment we access, how much energy we use, even what we Google. Somewhere all this data exists and if recent cases of data breaches are anything to go by, this alone makes us vulnerable.

The second issue is that of security. While many of our devices, such as our phones, have their own operating systems that can be updated for greater protection against viruses much of our tech doesn’t. And it’s these devices that freely send and receive and data that are the concern. With little or no protection in place against cyber-attack, how are we to prevent them turning rogue and infecting our whole network should one fall victim to a virus or hack?

Whatever our concerns it seems inevitable that our lives are only going to become more rather than less connected with tech giants and companies like Sylvania Connected Solutions working towards more integrated solutions on a large scale.

So, while we should embrace the future of our homes, cars and cities as becoming ever more entwined with technology there’s no harm in maintaining caution when it comes to how we choose to use our smartphones.

The future might be tech-driven but we are all still very human and have a right to our privacy and how our data is stored and shared. Let’s stay one step ahead of this smart technology.

Every business uses communication systems, and some use them in ways that others don’t. It all depends on the line of work that your business is in, and how you might need to use said technology. But we have to admit, some companies are just completely stuck in the stone ages when it comes to technology and their communication systems. Now isn’t this something that will have got your ears up. New Car Tech From CES 2019

The Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas is almost upon us and, as a result, automakers all over the world are releasing teasers for what’s in store for 2019, a year when many expect to see big leaps forward in automotive tech.

Let’s take a look at what the various car makers are promising and what we can get excited about in the days to come.

Emotional Recognition Technology

When face recognition technology first began to mature back in 2014, technologists predicted that it wouldn’t be long before it could start assessing our moods. And lo and behold, that’s precisely what happened. AI-powered technology soon learned what a stressed-out or happy human looked like and could theoretically be programmed to respond.

The market applications of this weren’t clear before, but now Kia has introduced what it calls an “emotional recognition system” that’s designed to pick up on cues from drivers and then adjust things like lighting automatically. No, the mood options are not yet installed on any Kia vehicles, but the company will be showcasing the technology using a pod at CES this year. A Modular Car

Mercedes-Benz has long been at the forefront of automotive technology, but at this year’s CES, the car company is looking for a way to outdo itself once again. It’s come up with such a wacky concept that it’s hard to imagine how it would work in practice, but the company wants to push the idea nonetheless.

The idea is for a modular car. The car would be small – perhaps only large enough for a single occupant – but would have an expandable bay at the rear so that people could take more luggage with them when they wanted to. The car would also run on batteries, making it one of the smallest cars in the world. It’s clear that the vehicle is inspired by Smart, a subsidiary of Mercedes that produces small, compact, eco-friendly city cars.

New Autonomous Tech

No, we’re not likely to see fully self-driving cars from any of the major manufacturers anytime soon, but companies are looking at ways to make life safer. But Audi says that it’s working on technology that will expand on the current array of autonomous driving options to help protect pedestrians too. Audi says that it will be introducing sensors that will help prevent an accident involving a collision with a pedestrian, as well as other road users.
The car company also wants to update its infotainment system to make it less demanding to use while on the road. Expect to see gesture technology as well as voice activation.

CES looks like it’s going to be another interesting year for the automotive sector as it plays catch up with the tech industry. Greater integration with tech products is leading to more opportunities to improve the driving experience.

Out Of The Office And Onto The Farm: A New Take On The Tech-Takeover

With today’s technology, working and generating and income doesn’t always have to happen in the traditional office setting. In many instances it can be done independently and remotely. In case you hadn’t realized, business has gone to the tech dogs. Nowadays, more of us than ever are working on the cloud and staring at computer screens. But, this isn’t a lifestyle we’re all happy with. For some, this ever-encroaching tech takeover is encouragement to take a step towards careers out of doors.

Let’s say you’re at the stage where the mere thought of another day in the office drives you wild. It’s past time to quit your job because you need a total change of scenery. The trouble is, you can’t think of a single outdoor-based career you’d be suited to. Everything you’ve ever done has been office based. Could someone like you ever make a go of things out and about?

Of course! You don’t need to entirely retrain to do so, either. In reality, you may be more qualified for outdoors jobs than you think. Keep reading to find out which positions would give you the best of both worlds.

Remote work

Okay, you got us; remote work may well mean doing the same job. But, the benefit with this is that you can choose where you complete those tasks. Forget sitting and staring at office walls; you could work in the garden as often as you fancy. Even better, you may find your current position allows for this. Sales are also a fantastic option here. While large portions of this work would be computer-based, most sales people have to travel to clients. As such, you’re sure to spend vast amounts of time out of the office. By embarking on a sales job in something like agriculture, you would even get to spend time outside on various country farms. And, a realtor’s day mainly consists of hosting property viewings. Put the two together, and you’ve got at least some time outside. Plus, your experience with computer programs means you’re well qualified for the office side of things. You would need to consider where you applied of course. A city-based company would be as useless for fresh air as your office life. But, applying in the right area is sure to bring just the breath of fresh air you’re after.
