Three Unexpected Ways to Create Space In Your Home

Two focuses of my blog are Home/Living Discussions and Home/Property Discussions. When you own a home, something you will think about at some point is creating more space. That could involved some sort of renovation but it could also involve maximizing what you already have. There are lots of interior-design tricks you can use to create the feeling of space in your home. What many people need, however, is actual space. With that in mind, here are three unexpected ways to create space in your home.

Learn to food shop effectively

Effective food shopping basically means ensuring that every food item you buy is completely used. There are two parts to making this happen.

Firstly, you need to buy foods which you are actually going to eat. It’s fine if you want to try out new foods from time to time and it’s fine if you decide you don’t like them. You should, however, make a point of buying new foods in small quantities even if they’re on offer.

Secondly, you need to be practical about the quantities of food you buy. Buying in bulk isn’t necessarily more economical at all. Even if it is, it may not be economical enough to justify the space bulk purchases take up.

Make it a goal to use up any food you already have. Then make a commitment to buying mindfully. At the very least, this should mean your kitchen cabinets are comfortably full rather than crammed full. It may free up space in your kitchen you can use to store items that are currently in other parts of your home.

Create a home inventory

This is basically a twist on decluttering. Choose an area of your home and go through all the storage locations one at a time. As you do, ask yourself if you would be willing to pay to put the items in a storage container. If the answer is “no”, then move it on unless you have a compelling reason to keep it for now.

If you do keep an item, then take a note of what it is, where it is, and by) when it should be used. Then commit to “using it or losing it”. As a part of this, make sure you check your home inventory before you buy anything new.

This exercise may sound like a lot of hard work, and it can be. It can, however, also be a lot of fun. You may well discover items you never knew you had. It can also help to give you a clearer idea of what sort of insurance cover you need.

Downgrade your technology

Modern homes tend to be full of technology and it can end up taking over a space unless you actively keep it under control. One of the keys to controlling your technology is to be clear about whether or not its usefulness justifies its cost and space.

As a rule of thumb, multifunctional items like phones and tablets can almost always be justified. Single-use items, however, can only be justified if you really want or need the higher level of functionality they usually offer. Even then, you should think carefully.

For example, if you’re a coffee-lover then you might well get regular use out of a barista-standard coffee machine. You could, however, do the same job using a few affordable and compact tools. It would take a bit more effort but could save a lot of space.

The Changing Of The Guard: How To Pass Your Home Onto Someone Else

Two focuses of my blog are Financial Literacy/Money and Business/Entrepreneurship. A person’s personal residence is not just a place to live, but it can also be a wealth building tool. The passing on of a home if done correctly can thus be the key to transferring and keeping wealth in a family. The following contributed post is entitled, The Changing Of The Guard: How To Pass Your Home Onto Someone Else.

* * *

Over time, many of us become very attached to our homes. We want to believe that our current arrangements and family setups will last forever. We don’t like the idea of time passing us by and there being nothing we can do about it.

Eventually, though, the time will come for you to move out and onwards with your life. And at that point, you’ll need to pass your home onto somebody else. It’s a kind of changing of the guard and a necessary part of life.

So what do you need to do practically to make it a reality?

Fix Up Your Roof

Pexels – CC0 License

The first step is to make sure that the structure of your property is intact. You don’t want to get to the survey stage of a transaction, only for it to fall through because you have a problem with your roof.

Fixing up the roof is easier than you might think. Usually, you don’t need to replace the entire thing. Just replacing a few tiles here and there will often do the trick.

While you’re sorting out the roof, also pay attention to other areas of your property that might show up on the surveyor’s report. Check the foundations to ensure that they’re still secure and not badly cracked. And be sure that your walls aren’t damp or allowing moisture into the insulation.

Change Your Locks

The next step is to change the locks – or at least get the process started. When new owners move into your property, they’ll want assurances that extra keys aren’t floating around. I start by searching for a locksmith near me. This way, I can get the ball rolling and use that as a way to sell your home and build trust with buyers.

Contact Utility Suppliers

Once you’ve done that, the next part of the process is telling utility suppliers that you’re moving out. Remember, they don’t automatically know if you’ve stopped using their services unless they receive notice from you. So, even if a new occupant is paying bills from the same address, you might still wind up paying via direct debit.

Have A Big Clearout

Pexels – CC0 License

People moving out of their long-time homes often like to have a big clear out before they move. Sometimes, it’s important to do this because it helps you focus on what matters. Plus, you can often save a lot of space in the removal truck.

Hire a big skip and place it outside the front of your property. And then go room by room, thinking about the items that you really need – and those you don’t.

Don’t be afraid to get rid of items that you haven’t used in a long time. They will only clutter your new property.

Give Notice

When moving, you’ll need to give notice to your landlord or whoever you pay the mortgage. Doing this helps to avoid any animosity and helps prevent any legal action against you.

Moving house can sometimes be a challenge emotionally. But a new start is also a lot of fun.

What to do if a Disaster Strikes at Your Home

A key focus of my blog is Home/Living Discussions. As a homeowner, you also want to think about what would happen should an emergency or disaster strike, in addition to decorating the house to your satisfaction. The following contributed post is entitled, What to do if a Disaster Strikes at Your Home.

Your home is your greatest asset, so you likely do everything that you can to protect it. Unfortunately, there are times when no matter how hard we try, homes become damaged by circumstances outside our control, such as natural disasters.

While no one likes to think about the worst-case scenario of something disastrous happening to their home, it is a good idea to be prepared, so that if the worse does happen, you will be ready for it and know what to do.

Extreme weather is on the rise across the globe. Winters are becoming colder, and summers are getting hotter, and natural disasters such as floods are becoming increasingly common. Knowing what to do if any of these issues causes damage to your house can help you minimize the destruction and feel as prepared as possible.

Create an Emergency Kit

Having an emergency kit ready and waiting for whenever you need it is vital. You never know when a disaster could strike, so being prepared and equipped with all the items that you could need will help to take a lot of the immediate stress out of the situation when it first happens.

Following government advice on what you should in an emergency kit, will help you to ensure that you have not missed anything important from your pack.

Protect Your Home

Protecting your home as best as you can is a useful habit. Before disaster strikes, making some changes to your property will help to minimize the extent of the damage that could occur. Making sure that your roof is well-maintained and watertight will ensure it fares better during a storm. Testing your smoke alarms will reassure you that they are in working order and will alert the family if a fire was to start. Simple steps such as these are easy to fit into everyday life and could make a significant difference if the worse was to happen.

Call for Assistance

If a disaster does strike at your home, the priority is to ensure that everyone is safe and escapes from harm. Calling the emergency services is vital if the damage is extensive or not under control.

Getting to a safe place is the most crucial thing to do, so figuring out in advance, where you would head if something did happen is essential.

Professional Help

If your home is hit by disaster, then it is essential to remember that you are not on your own. Firstly, it is vital to inform your insurance company about the incident to begin making an insurance claim, if appropriate.

One of the hardest things to deal with when your home is damaged is the loss of your possessions. However, you may be able to salvage your belongings with the help of a service such as PACKOUTZ that specializes in restoring items that have been damaged during a disaster. Having at least some of your possessions back with you where they belong, can be a great comfort at this difficult time.

There’s No Place Like Home: How To Adapt Your Home For Your Elderly Parents

Two focuses of my blog are Health/Wellness and Home/Living Discussions. A decision many of us will face is caring for our elderly parents. In some instances that involves moving them in with us, requiring us to prepare spaces in our own homes for their twilight years. The following contributed post is entitled, There’s No Place Like Home: How To Adapt Your Home For Your Elderly Parents.

Aging is a fact of life. Even then, it’s hard to watch as your parents struggle with things they used to do with ease. It’s as if they are no longer your superheroes. However, this is when you need to step in to make their lives more comfortable.

Some children do this by inviting their elderly parents into their homes permanently, yet, even if they remain in their property, you want them to visit and be a part of your life. As a result, it’s necessary to make adaptations to your home, regardless.

The question is, which ones should you focus on first?

Removing Fall Hazards

Hazards are double-edged swords. Not only do seniors struggle to see and or avoid them, but the impacts of a trip, no matter how small it seems, can be very damaging. And, if you have children, or lead a regular life, you are bound to have fall hazards throughout your home. Removing them is imperative, and you can do this with a simple audit. Go around your house and evaluate what’s safe and what’s unsafe, and find it a new place to live if it falls into the latter category. For example, decorative rugs or hardwood flooring might be slippy.

Installing Handles

You can’t go with them everywhere, which means you can’t always be around to lend a hand. Take the bathroom, for instance. Your parents require privacy, but your bathroom might not be conducive to the elderly. A surefire sign is an interior that lacks handles and rails. After all, the less-abled can’t lift their body weight without leverage. Installing hand grips is simple and cost-effective, yet it will make a significant difference to your parents when they visit or come to stay.

Putting Up Barriers

A mistake can be fatal. At the very least, it can be painful and result in a trip to the Emergency Room. You shouldn’t take any chances, and you don’t have to with barriers that are strong enough to shield your parents from further harm. A custom metal fabrication on the upstairs walkway is a fantastic place to start, as is the staircase, and any balconies or balustrades. And, if you have them, you might want to reinforce them just in case. With a custom metal design, you get peace of mind that everything is to a high standard.

Keeping Numbers Handy

You’re not a professional caregiver. You’re a concerned child who does the best they can to assist your elderly parents. This is commendable, but it means you will need help when situations take a turn for the worst. Thankfully, expert care workers are on hand, all you need is their number. Taking down the contact details of emergency contacts should enable you to negate any problems. Of course, you know what to do if it is serious – call 911. Either write them down or store them in your phone or both in case of a situation where you don’t have either handy.

There’s no place like home, not when it’s designed for safety.

Let Me Entertain You: How To Create The Perfect Gaming and Home Entertainment Room

A key focus of my blog is Home and Living Discussions. Some people argue that the most important parts of a home are the kitchen and the bathroom. Another key room though is the entertainment room which is where many people spend the most time. The following contributed post is entitled, Let Me Entertain You: How To Create The Perfect Gaming and Home Entertainment Room.

* * *

This year, we have all been encouraged to stay at home as much as possible. This means opportunities for going out to the cinema, bars, clubs, arcades and casinos have been limited.

However, staying at home does not mean that you have to be bored. If you have a room to spare room, you can create a room at home to fulfill all of your entertainment needs. Here, we look at how to plan the perfect gaming and home entertainment room.

Image via Pexels CC0

Invest in some comfortable furniture

The first thing you need to do is make sure you have some decent furniture in your home entertainment and gaming room. If you are planning on chilling out on an evening with a movie, or having your friends around for an all – night gaming and pizza session, the last thing you want is saggy old couches or rickety old dining chairs. No – treat it like an extension of your living room and invest in comfortable seating. You do not have to buy brand new – check out facebook marketplace and eBay for bargains, and consider adding things like beanbags, which are cheaper and comfortable alternatives.

Set up a snack station

When you are engrossed in a film or a game, the last thing you want to be doing is traipisng around the house searching for snacks and drinks to sustain you. Set up a snack station or a bar in your gaming and home entertainment room. It could be a mini fridge with a few cans of soda and beers or a full blown bar with optics. Make sure you stock up on easy to grab snacks – popcorn, chips and nuts are always a good option.

Choose a range of games

Make your gaming and home entertainment room the envy of everyone by making sure that you have a wide range of games and activities in place. Of course, the first thing you need is a decent sized TV with a sound bar and/or speakers to really throw the sound. Make sure you have your favorite game consoles and a range of games to play on it. Add in a pool table if you have the room and check out arcade machines for sale.

Think about the lighting

Lighting can be a tricky one in a gaming and home entertainment room. You do not want bright overhead lights shining in your face but at the same time, it needs to be light and bright enough to see what you are doing, especially if you want to reduce the risk of straining your eyes. Opt of wall lights rather than ceiling lights, lots of lamps and fun lighting options such as LED rope lighting. Think about your favorite gaming and entertainment center or bar; how do they use lighting?

Soundproof your space

Game and home entertainment rooms can get very noisy, so make sure that you have adequate soundproofing to avoid annoying the rest of the house or your neighbors. Put down carpets or rugs to absorb as much sound as possible and look at professional sound proofing options if necessary.

Eco-friendly Home Construction Ideas

Two focuses of my blog are Home and Living Discussions and Home and Property Discussions. There was once a time when construction didn’t take environment into consideration. In 2020, being eco-friendly is now an important consideration. The following contributed post is entitled, Eco-friendly Home Construction Ideas.

Are you building a new property or upgrading an existing one to be more in-line with modern eco culture and practices. If you are there’s a lot to think about. What materials will you use for construction, and how will you heat your home? Are you interested in building a home for the future? If so you will need the best steel foundations and SIPs paneling. An eco-home is definitely the future so make sure you build it with the future in mind.

Choose Your Location Carefully

When building your home or commercial property you need to consider its location carefully for the best eco-results. A south-facing home is far better than a west-facing one. It captures more of the sunlight throughout the day and gives you better energy efficiency. You will also want to build in an area that is not prone to earthquakes or floods, and that has excellent public transport links. Choosing the right locations can make all the difference to the success of your eco home and modern eco-lifestyle.

Consider the Size

In general, a smaller home is more eco friendly than a larger one. It might have less floor space but it’s easier to heat and cool is more cost-effective, and easier to manage in general. Think about it, how much does it cost to heat and maintain a large property where many of the rooms aren’t used. It’s better to build a smaller place and upgrade as needed. If your family or relative wants to stay, for instance, you can build an extension and optimize the property as necessary.

Building Materials

The materials you use to construct your eco-home with are all important. The materials after all will be responsible for temperature control and resistance to environmental pressures. SIPs panels are a favorite for modern eco-construction. They are easy to put together and create an air-tight highly insulated home. Choosing the best steel products for your eco home is also advantageous since you want to build the most effective time-tested foundations. Beta steel products are excellent for this type of construction and can be conveniently delivered anywhere.

Get the Insulation Right

It’s widely held that heating and cooling a home accounts for 50% of energy inefficiency in the home. Energy is lost through windows, doors, roofs, and leaks. These inefficiencies cost you money on your annual energy bills and increase your carbon footprints. If you’re constructing a new home ensure you use the latest insulation technology. For those upgrading their homes, there are also insulation solutions. Double or triple glazed windows are effective, heavy curtains and draft excluders also work well.

Energy Efficiency

The future is all about efficiency, and there’s a lot you can do to ensure your home is as green as possible. If you’re constructing a home from scratch consider all your options for heating. Install solar panels on the roof and consider newer options like geothermal heating. Although expensive at first, these technologies will save you significant sums of money over rather long term and reduce your carbon output. Inside, ensure all your appliances operate with an Energy Star rating. This is a modern energy standard for appliances that will ensure your home is optimal.

Building Your Own Home? Don’t Cheap Out on These Things

Two key focuses of my blog are Financial Literacy/Money and Home and Property Discussions. Many people want to build their home, versus purchasing a previously lived in structure. If you’re building your own home, there are some things you should scrimp on. The following contributed post is entitled, Building Your Own Home? Don’t Cheap Out on These Things.

* * *

Designing and building your own home is an exciting journey. You get to build your dream home that has everything you could ever need. It can be exhausting, even if you’re not doing the hard work of actually building it, but the results are worth it. Building a home from scratch is certainly not cheap, but there are ways to save if you want to. However, there are some things you should almost definitely not skimp on if you want to build a solid home. Before you start looking for ways to save money, be sure to take the following things into consideration.

Windows and Doors

The windows and doors of your home are two of the most important elements. They not only keep your home secure and protect it from the elements, but they also provide ventilation and sunlight when you need them too. Trying to buy and install doors and windows cheaply could lead to problems. It might mean you end up with leaks and drafts or it could mean you need to repair or replace your doors and windows sooner than you had expected. Choosing good quality products will protect your home and ensure both the interior and exterior look good too.

Insulation

Insulating your home properly keeps the heat in when you need it most. As well as keeping you warm, it’s good for the property itself. A warmer home will prevent mold and mildew, plus it will help you to reduce the amount that you spend on your energy bills. You can find different insulation materials and methods at varying price points, so it’s worth considering it carefully. Once you’ve insulated your new home, it will be difficult to change it after everything is finished. It’s better to get it right the first time if you don’t want to spend too much.

The Roof

Similarly to your home’s insulation, the roof will protect the structure of your home. Without a roof over your head, it won’t even be a property. The roof that you choose is also an aesthetic choice, and it forms a big part of what your home will look like. When you want to get the roof right, consult with a roofing company to find out what options you have. They can help you with different roof types, materials and other factors. Consider things like how long your roof will last and how easy it is to maintain.

Labor

Someone will have to carry out all of the work to build and finish your property. This is something that you definitely don’t want to cheap out on if you want to build a quality home. Cheap labor is more likely to produce poor results, so it’s worth paying for people who are going to get it right the first time. When you collect quotes from contractors, going for the cheapest option available isn’t always the right choice.

There are some ways you can save when building your home, but investing more in some things is a must. You should know which is which before you start construction.

How To Prepare For A Future Working From Home

Two focuses of my blog are Current Events and Career Discussions. The year of 2020 has forced a lot of changes on everyone and one of the biggest changes has been working from home. Even after Covid-19 subsides, working from home may become more permanent. The following contributed post is entitled, How To Prepare For A Future Working From Home.

While you might have enjoyed working from home temporarily this year, are you prepared for a future of working from home? Who knows if life will ever go back to normal, and even if it is safe to return to work, your company may decide that it is going to be more beneficial to them financially to have everyone working from home for good now. If this is the case, are you prepared for this, and do you have everything you need?

A Decent Office Space
Working from the kitchen table may have been acceptable as a temporary measure when you didn’t know how long it would last, and everything was out of sync. But as life gets back to normal, then it’s time to look for a more permanent place to set up your office. You don’t even need a whole room to do this as you can create a great office space in the corner of a room or under the stairs if you have enough space. All you really need is a desk for your laptop and papers, some storage and some peace and quiet. Also, check there are enough electric outlets.

Technology
If it’s going to be a permanent way of working, your company is responsible for making sure that you have the right technology to do your job as best you can. You’ll need a good internet connection and access to everything you would have in your office. Having 5G would make working a lot easier too, and according to Vertical Consultants, telecommunication companies have not quite delivered as promised when it comes to 5G, so that doesn’t make it an easy option right now; however, is something that will be important in the future.

Security
Cybersecurity will need to be up to date, and again this will really be your company’s responsibility to make sure the equipment you’re using is safe. But when it comes to your home, you may need to make it even more secure than you would have done before. For example, if your job requires you to handle confidential documents, then you’ll need a safe place to keep them. It might even be worth looking at video door entry systems for your home too, which will not only reduce your distractions but also keep your information extra secure.

A good routine
Many people struggle with a good routine and motivation when working from home, but once you get used to it, it becomes the norm. It’s essential to have a structure to your day and treat it still as if you were going into work, so make sure you get up, shower, and get dressed (even if it’s into something comfy), have your breakfast, and then get to work. Also, make sure that you separate your work from your home life and home admin, and when it’s time to finish work, you switch off completely and enjoy your evening.

If you want to use your time at home wisely, then learning a new skill is a great idea. Now is the perfect time to learn that skill that you have always wanted to master, but never had the time. While you may not be out and about during the lockdown and unable to meet up with people in-person, it is essential to connect with others during this time. With extra time spent at home, you may find that you have the opportunity to get back in touch with family members and friends that you don’t usually have the time to speak with.

Reconnecting with loved ones and learning new things will certainly keep you busy while at home.
