Everyone gets unwell now and then. Colds and other bugs can hit at any time, and you can also get headaches, migraines, or stomach issues from other causes. But sometimes you might have a good reason to be worried about your health.

If you find that you’re sick all the time or you have specific symptoms that don’t go away, there could be an underlying cause. Modern life has made some health problems more common, like insomnia and issues related to a more sedentary lifestyle. Here’s what you can do if you’re concerned about your health.

Keep a Health Journal

Once you start to notice potential issues with your health, you should consider keeping a health journal so you know how you feel each day. This will help you work out whether you are ill more often than you should be, or if you’ve happened to have a bad couple of weeks.

One potential issue with keeping a health journal is that you become much more aware of smaller health complaints that you might have ignored otherwise. While this can help diagnostically, it can cause unnecessary anxiety.

Focus on symptoms you notice the most, especially if you haven’t experienced them before. So if you haven’t been sleeping well, consider tracking your sleep. Some smart watches can even monitor your sleep each night. If you catch every bug going and don’t really recover, take note of these illnesses. If you start coughing and don’t stop for a while, try to mark when it started.

Go to the Doctor

The most obvious step to take is to go to the clinic and get a checkup. This gives you an opportunity to talk to a GP about your general health and the symptoms that concern you the most. Keeping a journal or making notes can make it much easier to remember everything.

If nothing else, the checkup will help your doctor either identify or rule out potential problems with your heart rate, blood pressure, or oxygen levels in your blood. The symptoms you talk about could also give your doctor ideas for potential diagnoses, and they can physically examine you.

Talk to Specialists

A GP is great for your general health and can diagnose a lot of health problems. But sometimes you need a specialist. Your GP could refer you, but you can also book a consultation yourself.

This is helpful if you have specific symptoms. For example, if you experience dizziness or ringing in your ears, a local balance test at an audiologist can identify issues with your inner ear.

Improve Your General Health

Finally, it’s a good idea to try to improve your general health. If you feel generally unwell or if you’re diagnosed with certain conditions, your lifestyle can really help. Following health tips to help you manage your health better might help you feel better.

If you do have a condition that isn’t affected by your lifestyle, improving your general health will make it easier for doctors to rule out lifestyle-based conditions, and it can help your recovery as you don’t need to worry about unrelated symptoms.
