Being unable to concentrate is common among most people, but there comes a point where it gets a bit out of control. The average person isn’t designed to be able to stare at a screen for hours at a time with full focus – or to do any task for an extended period. We need to take breaks, fuel our additional curiosities, and find ways to relax. For most of you, that’s all it takes to actually remain focused during the day because you’re breaking things up into digestible chunks.

But what about those of you who can’t seem to concentrate for more than 10 minutes, no matter how hard you try? You know you only have to focus on a task for a few minutes to get it done, but you’re always distracted or losing focus. There’s a chance this might not be “normal”, so what could be causing your lack of concentration?

Undiagnosed ADHD

Let’s just come right out and say it: you may have ADHD. More people suffer from this condition than you realize, and it’s largely because it goes undiagnosed in adults. If you always feel distracted and procrastinate all the time, then this might be the reason why. The only way to know for sure is by getting examined by an adult ADHD doctor – and here are some other signs that indicate you may have this neurological condition:

● You lose things all the time
● You’re always forgetting appointments
● You have a hard time concentrating when someone’s talking
● You hyperfocus on certain activities

Stress & Anxiety

For most people, a stress-free life is almost hard to imagine, but could that be why you’re always having a tough time concentrating? Feeling stressed or overburdened with worries means your mind is always occupied by something else. You can’t focus on tasks as you’re thinking about what’s causing the stress.

Sound familiar? If your mind keeps drifting to other things, especially things that worry you, then it’s a big sign that you’ve got too much stress going on. You could benefit from taking a few days off work to address your mental health while implementing daily changes that relieve your common stressors.

Sleep Deprivation

Do you get enough sleep every night? If you feel groggy and unrefreshed, that is likely to impair your ability to concentrate. But here’s the thing: even if you don’t necessarily feel that tired, your brain still might be reeling from a lack of sleep.

Sleep deprivation affects many parts of your brain, such as the areas associated with:

● Learning
● Emotional regulation
● Problem-solving
● Attention

Sleep Foundation says you should aim for 7-9 hours of high-quality sleep every night to help your brain flourish and allow you to do all of the above. So, if you’re having a hard time concentrating, maybe you just need more sleep?

Sometimes a lack of concentration comes from you being bored with whatever task is on your plate. Other times, it’s not really your fault at all. The next time you’re struggling to focus, ask yourself if it could be down to one of the issues above.
